Pelmeni dumplings are one of the most beloved comfort foods in Russian cuisine, but for many people in Boise, they’re still a discovery waiting to happen. The first bite surprises and delights our customers. They look familiar, taste comforting, and somehow feel both new and nostalgic at the same time.
At Alyonka Russian Cuisine, pelmeni is our most popular dish! In fact we often sell out before the end of the week! So if you’re looking for handmade pelmeni dumplings in Boise, get your order in soon!
What do they taste like?
Pelmeni are traditional Russian dumplings made with thin dough and a savory meat filling. They’re typically boiled and served hot, either in a light broth or alongside sour cream and fresh herbs.
Unlike dumplings that rely on heavy sauces, pelmeni are seasoned from the inside. The filling is carefully balanced so each bite tastes complete on its own. The dough is rolled thin enough to stay tender, but sturdy enough to hold everything together.
They’re simple by design, and that’s exactly why they’ve lasted for generations.

Origins and History
Pelmeni originated in Siberia, where food needed to be practical, filling, and easy to prepare in large quantities. Families would gather to make dumplings together, often producing hundreds at a time. Once assembled, they were frozen and stored for long winters.
This wasn’t just about efficiency.
Making pelmeni was (and continues to be) a shared ritual. Everyone has a role, from rolling dough to carefully placing the filling, to sealing the dumplings. It creates community. Our chef and owner, Elena fondly remembers making pelmeni with her family.:
“On Sundays, we’d sit down with the whole family at the table. Kneading the dough, rolling it out and hand forming each dumpling. And then we’d put each one on a big sheet of paper and take it outside in the freezing cold winter air. It would freeze and that’s where we’d store it.
Every evening we’d come home and boil our water and drop in the night’s pelmeni. It was like meal prep before it was trendy!”
Why Pelmeni Dumplings Feel So Familiar
For people trying Russian food for the first time, pelmeni tend to feel instantly approachable. Even if the name is new, the experience is not.
Pelmeni often remind guests of:
- Ravioli or tortellini
- Potstickers or wontons
- Pierogi
They hit the same comfort notes: warm, filling, and satisfying. That familiarity makes pelmeni a natural starting point for anyone curious about Russian cuisine.
How Pelmeni Are Made and Served
At Alyonka Russian Cuisine, pelmeni are made the traditional way, with time and intention. This isn’t a dish that gets rushed or outsourced.
Pelmeni-making happens outside of regular service so the team can focus entirely on the process. Dough is mixed and rolled by hand. The filling is seasoned carefully. Each dumpling is sealed individually, then frozen to preserve freshness and texture.
When you order pelmeni at the restaurant, they’re boiled fresh and finished simply. They aren’t fussy, but they sure do taste special. Like dumplings the way they’re meant to be eaten.
Pelmeni dumplings are traditionally served in a few simple ways, depending on how comforting you want the meal to feel.
- In a light broth, which makes the dish especially warming
- With sour cream and fresh dill for richness and balance
Both styles highlight the dumplings themselves rather than masking them with sauce. If it’s your first time ordering pelmeni, we recommend sharing several of our dishes with your table so you can experience everything.
